Principal’s Newsletter

It is hard to imagine that we are in June already and this academic year is ending.   June is a very busy month for us.  Please make sure you have our June calendar posted in your home for reference.

Graduation-  Our 8th grade, Class of 2017, will attend their 8th grade trip to Boys Scouts of America Camp grounds, in Alpine, NJ on June 7th.  This is a full day of activities: arrival at 8AM to SCCA- return to SCCA at approximately 6:00PM.    The dinner dance for Grade 8 and their families will be held on June 14th in Springman Hall.  June 14 is a 12 noon dismissal for grade 8 only.  June 15th there are no classes for grade 8.   On June 16th all graduates will arrive to SCCA at regular line up, in their cap and gowns.  Mass will be at 9AM.  Our graduates will walk the halls one final time after mass.  Graduation ceremony will be at 7PM.  Graduates are to arrive to SCCA by 6:30PM in cap and gown.

Kindergarten “Step Up “ to First Grade will be on Tuesday, June 20th.  The celebration will take place at 9AM in our Academy auditorium/lunchroom.   June 20th is their final day of classes.

Pre K for All will have an End of Year Celebration on Wednesday, June 21st in SCCA auditorium at 9AM.  This will be their final day of classes.

Our final Academy fundraiser is our Walk a Thon/Carnival on Tuesday June 13th.   Permission slips and pledges are due to the main office by June 9th.  Only students whose families are in good financial standing can participate.  Please make sure you have fulfilled your obligations.   Please remember that all students must wear socks!!! In order to play on the inflatable rides.

Half days- 12 noon dismissal for grades 1 to 7 begins on June 21st.  On June 22, 2017 there will be an early dismissal at 11AM following our closing mass and award ceremony.

Finally, our final Home Academy Parent Association Meeting is scheduled for June 19 at 7PM.  As of today, I have only received two nominations for the office of secretary.  It is important that our families attend this meeting and that we have more parents interested in taking on the responsibility of running our HAA.  Our Parent Association is integral to the viability of the academy.  Please consider running for office.   Also, make every effort to attend the HAA June 19th meeting.  Students whose parents attend can dress down June 20 and June 21!

Blessings for a happy summer,       Sheila Smith Gonzalez

May News

May is dedicated to the Blessed Mother.  We will be praying a decade of the rosary each morning for the month of May, please have your child bring in their rosary for Morning Prayer. Congratulations to our 8th graders who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on April 27th, at St. Camillus RC Church.   The second grade and some older students of St. Camillus Catholic Academy will receive the Sacrament of First Holy Communion on May 13th.

May is a very busy month here at the academy as we near the end of the academic year.

Mandatory Home Academy Association meeting on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at 7PM in the church.  Please arrive on time.  Attendance will be taken and N.U.T. cards will be given to all families who attend.  Agenda:    Update from the HAA on our fundraising, cost of educating a child at SCCA, Service hours and participation of families, marketing of the academy, and election of new HAA officers.  The HAA has three officer positions that are up for renewal: President, Vice President and Secretary.  The term of service is two years at SCCA.

Scholastic Book Fair will be held on May 8 to 11th in the lunchroom.  All students are invited to shop, this is a fundraiser for our academy.  It is also a great time to purchase books for summer reading!

Our Spring show will be on May 19th  tickets go on sale on Monday, May 1st  in the academy office.

Annual Science Fair is on May 22 in the academy.  Please come and visit to see our brilliant scientists work!  Viewing and judging will be from 9AM to 11AM and 1PM to 2PM.   Families are invited to stop in also from 3PM to 5PM to see the projects on display.

Please remember to make sure your child is in proper uniform every day for school.  Lateness is a serious problem for some students.  Parents must remember that the high schools ask for attendance on the applications, both public and Catholic.  You will be flagged if your child is late or absent more than 8 times.  This may result in not being accepted into the school of your choice.  It is important all students are on line at 8AM.

Important Dates

Dear Parents,

We have many important events coming up !!!

I would like to take this opportunity to remind all of our families that the fundraising we run and the events we host are all done to keep our tuition as low as possible.    Since every family benefits from the fundraising that the HAA sponsors, we expect every family to participate!  You can do this by working an event, selling raffle tickets, or attending the event and supporting it with your presence.   In looking at our Service Hours Report and the participation in our events (which families attend).  We have found that the same families constantly support the academy while others do nothing or little.    At the State of the Academy meeting we addressed this and asked all our families to fully invest in the academy.

Here are your opportunities to make that happen!!

Friday                   April 28    Adult Dance Party     Springman Hall  7PM   $25 a person

DJ, dancing, door prizes, raffles, adult party games, and deli buffet…BYOB

Come and support this fun night out.  Bring your spouse, or leave him home babysitting and make it a Girls’s Night Out      RSVP to the school office….to buy your tickets.

$10,000 Raffle   This is a major fundraiser!    Buy or sell tickets   cost is $100 for a chance to win $10,000.   200 tickets must be sold!    We will begin in May selling the raffle tickets, we need your help! Volunteer to sell tickets.  Ticket will be sold all through the month of May.

May 8 to 11th   Scholastic Book Fair

We need parents to help the children shop for books at the book fair and to keep count of our inventory.   We do receive a profit based on the books sold.

May 19th    Spring Show    Help us to raise money and offer treats to our audience!         We are looking for volunteers to send in items to be sold at the concessions stand.   Individually wrapped chips or cookies, cupcakes, juice boxes, water and cans of soda… a donation worth $25 will earn you 3 service hours…

May 22, 2017    Annual Science Fair

Need parents to assist us in setting up the science projects in the morning…8AM to 9:30AM   Judging will be in the morning and afternoon session and then we will host an Open House for our families to drop by and view the fair.

We will also ask for donations to provide a snack shop for the evening Open House in order to offer a treat to those who take the time to come and view the student’s projects.  $25 worth of donations can earn you 3 hours.

June 9th   7PM   HAA    Luau    and $10,000 raffle drawing

We are planning a fun family evening  Hawaiian Party with DJ, dancing, games, prizes, BBQ….to celebrate the end of the academic year and to pull our $10,000 lucky winner.   Make this a must attend event!!!

June 13, 2017    Annual Walk a Thon and End of Year Carnival

This is an all-day event….We need parents to volunteer to walk the boardwalk and help supervise our Walk a thon, supervise the inflatables and games, cook and serve the hotdogs and snacks, set-up and clean-up.     8 hours can be earned for this day  – 8 to 3

June 12, 13 or 14th      Decoration Committee   8th grade dinner dance

Are you a crafty, creative person?  Then we need your help to transform Springman Hall into a venue fit for the graduation dance.    Decorating will be after school hours…. Time will be sent home later as we plan the event.

We will have a mandatory Home Academy Parent Meeting on Fundraising, our goal for this year, Service Hours and Participation in Events….on May 2nd in St Camillus Church at  7PM.   Every parent must attend, attendance will be taken and Nut cards distributed.

Dear Families,

This is a ticketed event, flyers were sent home in your child’s green communication folder.  On April 12th there will be no bus service to and from school. Please make transportation arrangements for the morning and afternoon for your child. It is a full day of school with normal dismissal at 3:00pm, & 2:20 dismissal for Pre-k.  Non-public schools are only given a certain number of days that the buses will provided when public schools are closed. We have exceeded that amount therefore we lose a day of bussing. Chocolate sale has ended, please return all money immediately. Easter Recess begins at dismissal on April 12th and classes will resume on April 24th.  Please refer to the academy calendar for all of our events.

Keep in mind that in order to participate in school functions & volunteer you must be virtus trained.  Remember families are expected to serve the academy- minimum of 25 hours each year.

Dear Families,

March brings us into the liturgical season of Lent and the start of Spring!  It is a time for us to reflect and renew.  It is the time for our second trimester to end and report card conferences.  We are very busy at St Camillus Catholic Academy.  We have our St Patrick’s Parade, our annual chocolate sale, our Lucky Shamrock Raffle, Adult Paint Night, Rite of Reconciliation for our children preparing for sacraments, NYS ELA exams for grades 4,6, and 8.   Please refer to the academy calendar for all of our events.

NYS Exams:  We will administer the ELA exams in grades 4, 6 and 8 on March 28, 29 and 30th.  The tests are untimed.  Students who work productively can complete the test in the session.   We want our students to do their best but remember the test is only diagnostic.  The test is an indicator of performance and gives feedback to teachers and parents on student progress. It does not appear on the child’s permanent record, report card, nor does the score determine promotion.  In fact it is against NY State law to do so.

Service Hours:  We have many opportunities coming up…march with St Camillus at Rockaway’s St Patrick Parade on March 4th.  Bring giveaways to hand out to the crowd and earn service hours. Sell our Lucky Shamrock raffle tickets after mass and earn hours. Remember families are expected to serve the academy- minimum of 25 hours each year.

Report Card Conferences:  Parents will receive an appointment sheet to complete and return to schedule conference session with the homeroom teacher.  Families of SCCA who are behind in their tuition will not be allowed to meet with teachers.  The teacher will send home the time for the conference on March 20th.

God bless the students who will receive the sacrament of Reconciliation at St Virgilius on March 18th and at St. Camillus on March 25th.

Sincerely,

Sheila Smith Gonzalez, Principal

Policy on Inclement Weather

With the impending snow storm predicted for tomorrow, I wanted to go over our academy policy on school closing.

If NYC public schools close, we close.

If we decide to close, we will do so after considering safety and supervision of our student body and staff members.  We take many factors into consideration when we make this decision. Right now our concern is if it snows heavy during school hours, we worry about our dismissal and the safety of the roads to travel home.

We will send a parent alert through Option C to inform you of any closings. It is important your email and cell phone number are correct in our system.
